Hospital visits can be stressful for young patients, especially those with certain sensory needs. On Feb. 18, Tucson Medical Center celebrated the grand opening of the Angel Charity for Children Sensory Space at TMC for Children. The space is designed to provide a calming environment for neurodiverse pediatric patients.
“Angel Charity for Children is honored to support the pediatric sensory space at TMC. A place where neurodiverse children can find comfort, healing and support tailored to their unique needs,” said Kellie Terhune Neely, 2024 General Chair of the Angels.
The TMC Health Foundation was named a 2024 Opportunity Grant beneficiary, receiving $65,000 to fund the sensory space within TMC for Children.
“We wanted a space that allows patients to step away from the medical setting,” said Jenna Beatty, child life specialist at TMC for Children. “It helps them feel regulated and take on whatever they may experience during their hospital visit.”
The sensory room is open 24 hours a day and features a trampoline, full-body rocking chair, colorful lights, a starry ceiling, and other tools designed to create a calm and engaging environment for hyposensitive patients.
“We’re extremely grateful for this space,” Beatty said. “We’re excited about the positive impact it will have on our patients. We are thrilled!”
