Critical hospitals, critical care: Benson Hospital & NCCH make a difference
Beyond emergency care and medical treatment, critical access hospitals* such as Benson Hospital and Northern Cochise Community Hospital are increasingly recognizing and addressing the social determinants of health, understanding that well-being extends far beyond the walls of their facilities. A prime example of this commitment is their partnership with the Diaper Bank of Arizona, a collaboration that is making a significant impact on families in Southern Arizona.
Benson’s pioneering program
Benson Hospital pioneered this vital service in 2020. Recognizing a critical need within their community – highlighted by a community health needs assessment revealing that 20% of local children in Cochise County live at or below the poverty level – the hospital partnered with the Diaper Bank of Arizona to establish a diaper distribution program. This program, managed by Community Connected Manager Jason Zibart, provides diapers and incontinence supplies for both children and adults every third Monday of the month, and as needed.
Why adult incontinence supplies matter
While the need for diapers for babies is widely understood, the importance of incontinence supplies for adults is often overlooked. Adult incontinence can stem from various medical conditions, including aging, childbirth, surgery or neurological disorders. Incontinence can lead to significant physical and emotional distress, impacting quality of life, social interaction and even employment. Providing access to these essential supplies allows adults to maintain their dignity, comfort and independence.
Benson’s impact
Since the program started, Benson Hospital program has distributed more than 50,000 diapers--a testament to its impact.
Expanding the impact
Inspired by Benson Hospital’s efforts, NCCH followed suit. In 2024, NCCH partnered with the Diaper Bank of Arizona to bring this much-needed service to its community. "NCCH was quite inspired by Benson Hospital's efforts," explains Heidi Dehncke-Fisher, public relations liaison. The first NCCH diaper bank opened in Willcox this past August. Starting with just 17 attendees, the program quickly blossomed. By November, the program was serving nearly 60 individuals (of all ages) and distributing close to 3,000 products monthly. The program offers a range of supplies beyond diapers, including wipes, underpads, period kits and other related items, thanks to the partnership with the Diaper Bank.
Recognizing the needs of the more remote community of San Simon, NCCH launched a second diaper bank in October 2024. The San Simon program, timed to coincide with the community’s commodities distribution day, provides vital support to an area with an older population and economic challenges.
Critical access hospitals – agents of positive change
Collectively, the Benson Hospital and NCCH diaper programs are distributing approximately 7000 diapers and related supplies each month. These critical access hospitals are extending their reach beyond traditional medical care to address fundamental needs and empower families. They are more than just hospitals; they are community hubs, lifelines and agents of positive change.
